Measuring for your new cabinet doors couldn’t be easier. With a few basic tools and careful measurement, you’ll be ready to place your order — no professional required.
What tools do I need to measure for cabinet doors?
- Tape measure
- Pencil
- Notepad (or notes app)
How do I measure my cabinet openings?
- Write measurements as Width x Height (example: 14" W x 30" H).
- Make sure there is at least 1/8" clearance around openings.
- Keep notes organized (label each opening by location: “Sink Base Left Door,” “Upper Right of Range,” etc.).
Why does measuring to 1/16" matter?
Do these instructions apply to all hinge types?
How do I calculate my cabinet door size for a standard overlay?
Example
Opening: 14" x 30" → Door size: 15" x 31"
If you order by opening size alone, your doors will be too small.
How do I calculate sizes for split (double) doors?
- Add 1" to the height.
- Add 1" to the width, divide by 2, then subtract 1/16".
Example (36" opening width)
36" + 1" = 37"
37" / 2 = 18 1/2"
18 1/2" - 1/16" = 18 7/16"
This creates about a 1/8" gap between the doors. Rule of thumb: if an opening is over 24" wide, order two doors.
What if my overlay isn’t 1" (like 3/4" or 2")?
What do I need to know to measure for an inset cabinet door?
How do I measure for Lazy Susan cabinet doors?
- Measure each side’s front edge to the farthest back points for the Width.
- Measure from top to bottom for the Height.
- Add your desired overlay and subtract the door thickness to calculate the required door width.
Lazy Susans are ordered as two distinct doors, with one door needing an extended stile for installation.
Note: Please specify Lazy Susan doors in the customer comment box during checkout (step 4). The easiest way is to list the exact door sizes, for example:
“Please make the doors that are 20" x 28", and 18" x 28" for a lazy susan.”
Lazy Susan doors are available for wood doors and RTF. Lazy Susans are only available for Cope N’ Stick doors (not mitered).
Any tips before I enter sizes into the order form?
- Write out calculations clearly and double-check them.
- Underline or box your final door sizes so they’re easy to spot.
- Proofread sizes and quantities in the order form before submitting.
