Custom Cabinet Boxes FAQs

Learn more about our framed, frameless, and inset cabinet boxes, custom sizing, construction, finishing options, assembly, lead times, and priority production.

What types of custom cabinet boxes do you offer?
We offer three primary cabinet construction options:
  • Framed cabinet boxes with traditional stile-and-rail face frame construction.
  • Frameless cabinet boxes with modern, full-access construction and finished front edges.
  • Inset cabinets designed so the doors and drawer fronts sit within the cabinet face frame.

Each construction type is available in a variety of base, wall, tall, vanity, drawer, sink, corner, and specialty cabinet configurations.

What is the difference between framed, frameless, and inset cabinets?

Framed cabinets feature a traditional hardwood face frame attached to the front of the cabinet case. The face frame adds structure and creates a classic cabinet appearance.

Frameless cabinets do not use a separate face frame. The doors attach directly to the cabinet case, creating a clean, modern appearance and allowing greater access to the cabinet interior.

Inset cabinets use a face frame, but the doors and drawer fronts are sized to sit inside the frame openings rather than overlaying the front of the cabinet.

What materials are used to manufacture the cabinet boxes?

Our cabinet cases are constructed from 3/4-inch PureBond paint-grade plywood that is CARB Phase 2 compliant. We also offer 1/2" Purebond plywood for the cabinet carcass.

Cabinets feature a durable screw construction, providing exceptional strength, rigidity, and long-term performance while ensuring precise assembly and consistent quality.

Cabinet interiors feature maple veneer with a durable, UV-cured baked-on finish. The UV finish contains no VOCs and provides a smooth, easy-to-clean interior surface.

How are the face frames constructed?

Framed cabinet boxes feature traditional stile-and-rail face frame construction. Paint-grade hardwood is the standard face frame material.

We offer maple, silver maple, white oak, red oak, alder, hickory, walnut, and cherry face frames. Specialty wood species may require additional production time of up to 4-6 weeks.

How are the exposed edges finished on frameless cabinet boxes?
Frameless cabinet boxes use 0.5 mm paint-grade edge banding on applicable exposed front edges. The integrated toe-kick area must be covered with a matching toe-kick skin or finished panel after installation.
Are the cabinet boxes available unfinished or painted?

Yes. Cabinet boxes can be ordered unfinished or with a professional factory-painted finish.

We can provide factory finishing in virtually any Sherwin-Williams paint color upon request. Custom paint colors should be provided in the order notes at checkout when placing your order or working with your CabinetNow representative.

What are the production lead times for cabinet boxes?

Standard unfinished cabinet box production is typically estimated at 1–2 weeks. Factory-painted cabinet boxes generally require approximately 3 additional weeks for preparation, painting, curing, and quality control.

Lead times are estimates and may vary based on order size, product configuration, material availability, finishing selections, assembly selections, and current production volume.

Are production timelines measured in business days?
Yes. All stated production timelines are based on business days. Saturdays, Sundays, observed holidays, shipping time, and transit delays are not included in manufacturing estimates.
What is the difference between Standard and Priority Production?

Standard Production
Orders are scheduled within our standard manufacturing queue. This option is best for projects with flexible schedules or projects planned well in advance.

Priority Production
Priority Production moves your order ahead in the manufacturing queue to provide a faster estimated turnaround for time-sensitive projects.

If you pay the Priority Production fee and we do not meet the applicable priority production estimate, the Priority Production fee will be refunded. Production estimates are based on business days and exclude weekends, holidays, shipping time, and circumstances outside the manufacturing schedule.

Are the cabinet boxes shipped assembled or ready to assemble?

Cabinet boxes are available as ready-to-assemble cabinets, commonly called RTA cabinets and shipped flat-packed.

Pre-assembled cabinet boxes may also be available for an additional assembly fee of $125. Assembly availability and charges depend on the cabinet type, quantity, dimensions, and shipping requirements.

Can the cabinet dimensions and components be customized?

Yes. Our cabinet boxes are made to order and can be customized using the options shown on each individual product page.

Available selections may include cabinet width, height, depth, finished sides, toe-kick configurations, shelving, vertical dividers, pull-out trays, drawer configurations, assembly, door options, and other product-specific components.

What manufacturing tolerance is used for custom cabinet components?
Framed, frameless, and inset cabinet components are manufactured to a standard dimensional tolerance of 1/16 inch. Customers should carefully verify all submitted dimensions, openings, clearances, and installation requirements before ordering.
What drawer box and glide system do you recommend?

Our recommended drawer system includes 1/2-inch, 9-ply Baltic birch drawer boxes with dovetail joinery and 1/4-inch captured bottoms.

Drawer boxes are fully assembled, sanded, and rated for up to 100 pounds when used with the appropriate hardware and installed correctly.

We recommend Blumotion undermount drawer glides with full-extension movement and integrated soft-close operation.
